I wish I knew what the name of this flowering shrub is, but I don't. It grows naturally along the bank of the river and I have admired it over the years. It doesn't seem to grow any higher than about five or six feet and it grows just above the tideline. While the leaves are green, even before it flowers in the fall, it gives you the impression it has a lot of red in it since the stems are reddish and the some of the leaves develop reddish veins as they age over the summer.
It flowers late in the summer producing small pink inflorescences that also give a general sense of being reddish. It is just a lovely plant. I have searched shrub books and the Internet without finding it's name.
Here is a close-up of the flower bracts. If you know the name of the plant, I'd appreciate hearing from you.
In this photo of the leaves from this plant (taken early in the season), there is not one real leaf. The entire photo is a water reflection! It highlights how well water can reflect when it is completely still.
Here is the same photo flipped over if you find the other disorienting.
The opening quote ("What it was was") was from something Andy Griffith said in a comedy monologue about football.
