We are quickly approaching nesting season, a make or break time for a lot of birds.
Some birds are much more tolerant of the presence of humans than other species. If you are interested in photographing birds which are raising their young, it is always a good idea to read a little background information on that particular species beforehand. Birds that are usually more tolerant of we humans are the same ones that are commonly seen around our dwellings, species such as wrens, house finches or nuthatches. The birds will tell you through their body language and voice if you are getting uncomfortably close. A long lens will allow you to stay further away and that is always a good thing. Think about the consequences of disturbing an active nest before you begin to film. It is just not worth any photos you might get if it causes the parents to abandon their young and they fail to raise a brood that season. Be responsible.
Here are a pair of white-breasted nuthatches bringing food for the brood. Where do they get this stuff?...
