A Balanced Diet

There have been three occasions where I have seen a great blue heron catch a sea lamprey.  You wouldn't think of them (lampreys) as inhabiting the river, but one is random, two raises suspicion, and three's a crowd.  You can see the sucker disk underneath the jaw. Great blue herons will eat almost anything that moves, given the chance.  I have seen them eat snakes, insects, crabs, fish, eels, as well as lampreys.  Oh, and decorative koi from ponds. I have also seen them throw fish back.  Twice.  You wouldn't think they would do that either.
