A Face Only A Mother Could Love

In the post on July 10th, I said I would post a head-on shot of a great blue heron.  I had a hard time finding a head-on image because they are so ugly, I usually throw them out.

See what I mean about being hard to figure out what you are even looking at? Despite having a broad bill that is probably eight or nine inches long, you can hardly see it when looking at one straight on.  And, that is what I mean about it being an advantage for them when fishing.  I think that, despite their size, it is hard for a fish to see them. Add to that the fact that they move very slowly while fishing and, bingo, dinner is served.
