"Take the Shot"

This is what is called a "grab shot." Rather than end up empty-handed, you take a shot no matter what else is in the picture so that at least you have a record of the main subject.  It is like the sniper in a hostage situation who takes the shot while he can. Are ya having trouble keeping your eyes on the crane?

Backgrounds matter. It only seems right that a wild animal should have a background that comports with its nature.

Ahhh. Much better. At least until you realize there is too much uniformity to the background and figure out it is the shingled roof of a house. You may have initially thought it was just sky.  With a little blurring, it could probably be made to pass for sky.

These are the kinds of things that have to be considered when taking photos of wildlife. The background in this photo and the next come much closer to showcasing the bird while not distracting from the crane.  The "dust bunny" a foot or so from the tip of the bird's beak is actually a bug that was in the same plane of focus and too small to be of interest to the crane.

Finally, a background that compliments rather than distracts from the main subject.
