Downy Woodpecker
I'm posting this shot of a downy woodpecker, not for its value as an identifier of the species, but because I liked the quality of the light and the almost illustrative nature of the photo. Other than an adjustment to tone and contrast, nothing has been done to the picture. It was taken just after sunrise and the woodpecker is looking directly into the sun, so it's eye has a nice catch-light in it without which it would look rather dead. If you look closely, you can make out the red coloration on it's crown which marks it as a male. DWP's are non-migratory and are not as shy as many other woodpecker species. They also display good manners at the feeder, waiting to take their turn and not bullying other birds. That is not true of a lot of other species.
