Stealth Mode



Great Blue Herons have an ability to flatten their profile in flight as this photo illustrates.  It isn't that I just happened to catch the bird in this position as it was flapping it's wings.  It was gliding and they can acquire an odd look when they do this.  They also look really odd when you see them head on. In fact, it is hard to figure out what you are even looking at.  And that may be an advantage for them in catching fish. Despite having a rather massive head, it all but disappears when you look at them head on.  I'll post a head on shot tomorrow and see if you don't agree.
