Take-off

Here is another image showing the surface water erupting below a double-crested cormorant on taking off.  Some birds can take off straight up into the air while others have to get a running start to become airborne.  Cormorants are in this latter group.  Some run a long ways before they can get into the air.  Cormorants have huge, (and what appear to be floppy) feet, so they can really splash some water as they take off.
