Tricolored Heron
When I first saw a tricolored heron, it instantly became my favorite of all the herons I have seen. This image of one preening along side a couple of mallards gives you some sense of their size - although mallards are rather large as ducks go. They get their name from the variety of colors seen in their plumage which are unlike almost any other heron. The snowy egrets do not mind foraging in large flocks, but tricolored herons are intolerant of other members of their species. When I have seen two of them in the same locality, one will pester the other unceasingly, chasing it all over the landscape. It is similar to the intolerance of great blue herons for others of their species, except in spades.
