What I'd Give for a Drink of Water

Like almost any other animal, great blue herons are creatures of habit.  After they have swallowed a fish, they like to wash it down with a sip of water. If they are wading along the shore, that is no problem, but if they have caught a fish and brought it back to a dock to eat it, it can be a long way to the water. The first time I saw one do this, it surprised me. Now, I anticipate it and try to get it on film. I had to laugh one time.  The heron couldn't quite reach the water from one side of the dock, so it went over to the other side and tried again thinking it might not be as far to the water over there.
